It was opening morning of the 2002 spring season. My friend Robert and I were hunting his uncle's land in Jackson county. We arrived just before dawn. At daybreak, the ole' beard dragger sang out. We quickly set up about 150 yds out.

I called and he shook the ground. Gave a few more hen yelps and he appeared about 70 yd. away. I sat my call to the side and began to give some soft purrs on my mouth call. The ole tom blew up and began to make his way on in. I quit calling, making sure not to let him hang up. I slowly gave a few scratches in the leaves and the ole boy shook the ground again. Only I could see the gobbler so I decided to see just how good my ghillie suit would work and let him come as close as possible. I motioned for Robert to continue scratching because I was in between him and the gobbler. I slowly switched my over and under to shoot the bottom barrel so it would be modified instead of x-full. At five steps he blew up and turn away from me giving me time to draw a bead. As he came out of strut I layed in to him.
