Spring Harvest
2004 |
Statewide, 14,388 birds were killed
during the spring 2004 season, which for the
first time included afternoon hunting the final
two weeks. The harvest is down about 20 percent
from last year's harvest of 17,988 gobblers
and well below the 2002 spring record of 18,345.
Counties east of the Blue Ridge Mountains
had a higher relative decline - down about
25 percent, from 11,810 last year to 8,914
this spring - than those west of the Blue
Ridge - down about 11 percent, from 6,178
to 5,474.
Bedford County again led the state with 532
gobblers reported killed, down from last year's
648. Others in the top five were Franklin,
with 516 (586 last year); Pittsylvania, with
468 (604 last year); Scott, with 366 (368
last year); and Halifax, with 309 (368 last
year).
