In 1979, just less than 9,000
hunters participated in the spring season
and took 627 gobblers for about a seven percent
success rate. Very few of those hunters were
hunting in southern Michigan.
In 2004, that number had climbed
to 92,000 hunters who took 37,500 gobblers
for about a 41 percent success rate.
In 1979, there were about
4,900 square miles open to turkey hunting.
In 2004, that number had bloomed to more than
44,000 square miles of hunting area.
